Native: Yes
State Rank: S5
ITIS Code: 163382
National Rank: N5
Global Rank: G5
Modeled By: Anna Loan-Wilsey
State Range:
The blacknose dace is common throughout central and northeast Iowa, with scattered populations also being found in the Little Sioux River, Big Sioux River, Rock River and Floyd River drainages (Harlan et al. 1987). However, it appears to be absent from southeast Iowa. The distribution of the blacknose dace in Iowa seems to be increasing, especially in the Eastern Broadleaf Forest Subregion (Harlan et al. 1987).
Habitat Affinities:
The blacknose dace seems to prefer clear, cool headwater and medium-sized streams over gravel bottoms (Becker 1993; Cross and Collins 1995; Eddy and Underhill 1974; Etnier and Starnes 1993; Tomelleri and Eberle 1990). Shoal chub-Macrhybopsis hyostoma It is common in moderate to rapidly flowing water (Becker 1993; Smith 1979; Trautman 1981) and appear to reach its greatest abundance in trout streams such as in Northeast Iowa (Harlan and Speaker 1969).
Predictive Model(s):
