The bluntnose minnow is one of the most common and generally distributed fishes in Iowa, second in collections only to the creek chub. It is rare in collections from the Mississippi River and with the exceptions of the Lower Big Sioux, Little Sioux, Rock, and Floyd River watersheds, is completely absent from the Missouri River drainage (Harlan et al. 1987).

Habitat Affinities:

The bluntnose minnow can be in all types of waters but is most abundant in quiet pools and backwaters of moderate size streams and lakes having clear, warm water, permanent flow, gravel bottoms, and some aquatic vegetation. (Becker 1983; Pflieger 1997; Robison and Buchanan 1988). In Illinois, it is found almost everywhere except in swamps or regions of extremely high pollution (Smith 1979).  Trautman (1981) found that the bluntnose minnow was most abundant in waters draining lands rich in organic matter and high in phytoplankton populations.  In Iowa, the bluntnose minnow prefers small, clear creeks and shows an intolerance of high turbidity (Harlan et al. 1987).
