Iowa Fish Atlas

Quillback Carpsucker-Carpiodes cyprinus

Native: Yes

State Rank: S5

ITIS Code: 163917

National Rank: N5

Global Rank: G5

Modeled By: Anna Loan-Wilsey

State Range:

The quillback carpsucker is distributed throughout Iowa, extending from the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers into the large interior river and most river impoundments (Harlan et al. 1987). It is found in almost every watershed in the state.  In these larger rivers, the quillback, along with the river carpsucker, comprise the majority of fish biomass.   However, in small streams that have quillback populations, their abundance is rare (Harlan et al. 1987).

Habitat Affinities:

The quillback inhabits reservoirs, lakes and low gradient parts of streams with large, permanent pools and coarse bottom material (Clay 1975; Etnier and Starnes 1993; Pflieger 1997; Robison and Buchanan 1988). It often reaches its greatest abundance in sandy-bottomed rivers (Trautman 1981) or as in Kansas, is only found in such habitat (Cross and Collins 1995). While the quillback normally lives in quiet waters, it moves to deep gravelly riffles to spawn (Pflieger 1997; Phillips et. al. 1982).  In Iowa, the quillback carpsucker is most abundant in clear, highly productive streams but readily adapts to other habitats (Harlan et al. 1987) due to a wider range of ecological tolerance than other carpsuckers (Smith 1979).
