State Range:
The bluntnose darter is an endangered species in Iowa (571 IAC 77.2(1) (2004)). This species was so rare that Harlan et al. (1987) suggested that it may be extirpated from the state with the exception of a possible remnant population in the Mississippi River. In recent years however, bluntnose darters have been documented in the Mississippi River (LTRMP 2002) as well as in the Little Maquoketa River watershed (Manchester Fish Management 2002). Iowa approximates the northern limit of this species’ original range (Harlan et al. 1987).
Habitat Affinities:
The habitat of the bluntnose darter is typified by quiet water of low-gradient, with little or no current, reasonably firm substrates of sand, clay, mud or silt, and organic debris (Harlan et al. 1987; Kuehne and Barbour 1983; Page 1983). It can be found in swamps, sloughs, bayous, ditches, intermittent and permanent streams, oxbows and backwaters (Clay 1975; Cross and Collins 1995; Eddy and Underhill 1974; Etnier and Starnes 1993; Pflieger 1997; Robison and Buchanan 1988; Trautman 1957). Pflieger (1997) found that the bluntnose minnow avoided clear ditches having dense growths of aquatic vegetation while Cross and Collins (1995) note that in oxbows and overflow pools clear water and vegetation are desirable. The bluntnose darter can tolerate high turbidity but its decline from Plains streams might be due to high siltation associated with row-crop production and overgrazing in the region (Pflieger 1997).
